My Disillusionment with the Jedi Order--Part One

I've slowly been turning into Anakin. Very slowly.
I do see problems in the Jedi Order, though. Big ones. Glaring ones. They need to be corrected. Nothing is perfect, so I'm not sure why I'm expecting the Order to  be. But I am.

  • No attachment. Humans were made to be attached to others. We have a huge capability to love, and the Jedi are preventing that. Anakin loved and was loved from his birth. He, unlike all the other Jedi, knew his mother. And not just for a little, no, he knew his mother for nine years. Therefore, it was easy for him to fall in love with Padmé, his angel. Humans also need friends. They can't be alone all the time. With no attachment, a person would feel alone, and lost. Sure, you have the Force for comfort, but you can't see it. You don't have the comfort of a friend standing by you. Sure, there's problems with attachment. You can get a broken heart, you can be betrayed, and you can become a cold person, caring for no one and nothing. I firmly believe that a person needs to be able to love and be loved in return. It is harder to fall to the dark side when you're focused on others. When you're focused on yourself, you'll be a selfish person, making it easy to fall.

Also, the Parade Gown won the poll for the most favorite TPM gown.

  1. I have to say, being a Jedi is far harder than it looks. Single or married, it's a hard life to live. But not being able to love is silly. If you can not love, than what is left? Hate. Or worse, nothingness. What's life if you cannot love or care?
The Jedi should be able to love and marry.
But like Anakin, they should be aware of the evil inside of themselves and dispose of it before it is too late.

  2. In Expanded Universe, aren't Luke and Leia both married? They're Jedi. I think that the New Jedi Order is definitely better than the old one. Padme, you are so right, if you aren't allowed to love, all that's left is hate. Reading more books about the Old Jedi Order I realize how confusing it is. No attachment, yet compassion, and you are supposed to rely on others, but also on only the force, and yourself. It doesn't really make sense. The Jedi may of had some problems, but the Sith were twisted in ways that were just creepy. Love is the key, It wins in the end. Remember how Luke saved Anakin... Love.

  3. I agree with both of you. I was talking to a fellow Jedi the other day (I won't reveal her name....she asked me not to.) and she was telling me about the old Order. I was shocked at how confusing it is, and glad, at the same time, that I do not have to live in those times. Jedi are allowed to love now, as I am, although we dispose of our evil quickly. The new Order isn't nearly as confusing as the old one. I believe that if we had not changed it, there would be no Jedi left. We would all have turned into Sith by now. Turned to darkness, hate, despair. I was reading the old books too, Jedi~Chick, and I see what you are saying. It is was forbidden to attach, but you must have love for the universe around you. It is impossible for that to happen. We cannot survive without love. We are human.

  5. I know what you mean about wanting the Jedi Order to be perfect, and agree that "no attachment" is a problem. I could see it if Jedi didn't marry and totally dedicated their lives to the Force and the Order, but to forbid attachment is to forbid something that keeps us going; love for people is something to live for and die for. Karen Traviss' novel "The Clone Wars: No Prisoners" has some great quotes dealing with with this topic including:

As with all faith, some basic messages become distorted over time. Why should /attachment/ lead to the dark side? Loving commitment is the cornerstone of civilization, of society, and unites all living creatures. How can it be wrong? I assert that it's fixation - /obsession/ - that leads to darkness and evil. That blind focus can corrupt any area of our lives. We may do terrible things because we're obsessed with a lover, with wealth, with power ... or even with a set of inflexible beliefs that have come to mean more to us than the welfare of living beings themselves. Do you take my point, Master Yoda?

--Master Djinn Altis, in a rare exchange of letters with Master Yoda, some years before the outbreak of war

I think it's that obsession that drove Anakin to the dark side, he just couldn't let go of people he loved.

I've been thinking about this a lot, thus my long speech. :P Personally I think it doesn't make sense for the Jedi to have that rule, but it does make for good plots in AotC and RotS. :)

  6. I agree with Christine. She has points that I tried to maximize in my comment, although I'm not sure I did it correctly. But overall, I think Christine should be a Master.

  7. My little sister is so cute. She just asked me why Anakin turned to the Dark Side, and why he wasn't allowed to love Padme. I told her about the Jedi Rules and how he thought that more power could help him save his wife. My sister then said, " Padme got a good husband, Anakin just got mixed up, he's a very confused man. It's not his fault the Emperor lives by telling lies." It made me think of you're post Padme' and I just had to comment.

  8. I love your little sister, Jedi~Chick! How old is she? She's really perceptive.

Christine--Karen Traviss' books have gotten me thinking about the Jedi Order and that it does have flaws.

I do want to say thank you to everyone for praying for my dad! I can't believe I neglected that!! Life's been a little crazy around here, but that gives me no excuse.

  9. Your welcome for praying, I'm glad to hear that your dad is alright. My little sister is 8 (and a half), and she smiled when I told her that I commented about her on your blog. She asked if it would make her famous. I said maybe...
